Senior Civil Design Engineer / Civil Engineer – Grid Connections & Substations

Turner Lovell is currently recruiting for a Senior Civil Design Engineer to join a rapidly expanding engineering design consultant and grid connection contractor. Our client delivers design and build solutions for grid connections, substations and cabling projects across the UK power network.
As the Senior Civil Design Engineer, you’ll lead civil design for electricity substations from 11kV to 132kV (11kV, 33kV, 66kV, 132kV), including OHL and underground cable routes. You’ll develop drawings, calculations and specifications for a range of civil and structural assets, and support the construction teams to ensure your designs are safely and efficiently built on site.
We are open to appointing at Civil Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer level, with backgrounds in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a mixture of both.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead civil design for grid connections, substations (11–132kV), OHL and underground cable routes.
- Produce and review drawings, calculations and specifications for:
- Equipment and building foundations
- Control buildings and kiosks
- Transformer bunds and oil containment
- Cable trenches, duct routes and joint bays
- OHL foundations, crane pads and access roads
- Surface water drainage and general earthwork
The Person
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 2 but ideally 3-10 years’ experience in transmission, distribution, substations, grid connections or related energy infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of the full project lifecycle from feasibility through detailed design and handover.
- Experience with civil design for substations, cable routes, foundations, buildings, drainage and roads.
- Familiar with AutoCAD and MS Office; experience in Civil 3D, Revit or Navisworks is advantageous.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
