Commissioning Engineer – MV Switchgear (BESS)

- Contract: £55 – £65 per hour. Outside IR35
- Duration: 2–4 months (extension possible)
Experienced commissioning engineers required to support the testing and commissioning of medium-voltage switchgear and protection systems on a large battery energy storage project. The role involves commissioning 33kV switchboards equipped with digital protection relays, supporting both main and auxiliary switchrooms. Scope includes testing and commissioning of protection schemes, switchgear, auxiliary systems, and SCADA interfaces as part of a large-scale grid infrastructure project.

Duties
- Commissioning of 33kV switchgear, protection, and auxiliary systems on a large-scale power infrastructure project.
- Conducting inspections, wiring checks, and insulation resistance testing of control and protection circuits
- Performing CT/VT testing including primary injection, magnetisation, ratio, polarity, burden, and continuity checks
- Carrying out high-potential testing of switchboards and testing voltage indication systems at system voltage & Secondary injection testing of protection relays and DC relays, including overcurrent, earth fault, voltage, arc flash, synchronisation, and breaker failure schemes
- Performing IEC 61850 functional testing, protection scheme proving, and interlocking tests
- Supporting SCADA I/O verification and control system energisation activities
- Commissioning auxiliary systems including battery systems, UPS supplies, auxiliary transformers, and LVAC switchboards
- Supporting energisation, on-load relay verification, and intertripping tests with external stakeholders
Requirements
- Electrical Engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent)
- Experience commissioning 33kV switchgear and protection schemes
- Strong working knowledge of ABB or Siemens or Schneider protection relays
- Experience with IEC 61850 protection and SCADA communications
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and protection drawings
- CSCS / ECS card / Safety Passport / CCNSG (preferred)
