Senior Control & Protection Engineer – HVDC
- Location: Dubai, UAE or Saudi Arabia or India OR Egypt
- Employment Type: Permanent
Turner Lovell is recruiting a Control & Protection Engineer for major HVDC and AC grid projects in the Middle East. Our client is a global leader in energy technology and grid infrastructure, delivering solutions that modernise networks and support digitalisation. HVDC experience is essential. The ideal place for this position will be based in Dubai but flexibility exists to be based in Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt or Turkey.
In this role you will own secondary engineering for tendering of HVDC projects. The focus is study-led design: protection SLDs, control & protection schemes, SCADA/SAS, auxiliary supply systems, and associated equipment—built on robust power-system studies.
Key responsibilities
- Develop control and protection schemes for HVDC projects across Middle East and connecting regions.
- Develop control and protection single-line diagrams for HVDC converter stations and AC/EHV yards.
- Specify and define electrical equipment and interfaces for HVDC converter stations and AC yards (e.g. switchgear, CT/VT, protection/IED panels, cabling, auxiliary AC/DC systems)
- Perform short-circuit, load-flow, stability and protection-coordination studies; set sequencing and tune parameters to meet grid-stability criteria.
- Build and verify models in PSCAD/EMT, PSSE, RSCAD/RTDS and MATLAB; run static and dynamic studies for HVDC/FACTS applications.
- Produce secondary deliverables: SLDs, logic & wiring diagrams, I/O lists, relay settings, calculations, BOQs and technical specs for tender and execution.
- Integrate C&P, SCADA/SAS and auxiliary systems with multi-discipline teams;
- Support proposals with assumptions/clarifications, scope definition, cost allocation and estimates.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s (Master’s preferred) in Electrical/Power Engineering.
- 5+ years in substation protection, control and auxiliaries design;
- At least 1 year proven HVDC/FACTS project exposure, ideally more
- Experience in modelling of HVDC converters is considered as an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of generators, transformers, switchgear and transmission lines.
- Proficient with PSCAD/EMT, PSSE, RSCAD/RTDS, MATLAB and relay coordination tools.
- Deep understanding of protection schemes: overcurrent, differential, distance, busbar; able to analyse relay settings, curves and fault records.
- Familiar with IEC 61850, SCADA/SAS interfaces and secondary CAD (AutoCAD/Engineering Base).
- Clear communicator, organised, delivery-focused; fluent in English.
- Based in Dubai (or willing to relocate).
